United Way 2-1-1 Information and Referral Call Centers play many important roles in the communities they serve throughout the nation. In addition to pointing people to the services they need and providing answers to community based questions, 2-1-1 is the hub of the region during a national disaster. 2-1-1 unifies the multiple health and human services, as well as directs people where to go to get the appropriate help they need during a critical time. The tornadoes that recently devastated several southern states are a perfect example of 2-1-1’s capabilities to assist in times of disaster.
With a death toll currently over 200, the tornadoes in Alabama are one of the worst natural disasters in the state’s history. Individuals in need of help are encouraged to contact 2-1-1 to connect with the services they need.
The focus now is search and rescue.
